Turin-based designer Anna Bacchelli began her career in jewelry during the 1930s by assisting her husband in his goldsmith's shop in Piazza Carlo Alberto. A passionate amateur botanist, she specialized in creations inspired by nature and began by making wax models of the jewels that she eventually rendered in the best materials. After her separation from her husband, she set up her own shop at 15 Via Battisti under the name Orisa. Her patrons included Turin's high society and the Italian Royal Family for whom she had redesigned existing jewels. A highly talented and eccentric artist, she refused commissions from those who were not in agreement with her and left the jewelry business altogether after the 1960s. The brooch offered here came from her personal collection and was originally offered by Sotheby's in Milan in June of 1999.

Catalogue Note

A native of Turin, Anna Bachelli worked as a designer for Van Cleef & Arpels and Buccellati during the 1930s and 40s. During the 1950s she branched out on her own and focused her efforts on creating highly original jewels for her private clients. Her works were not signed.
