Catalogue Note
The meander motif at the terminals of this brooch was a symbol of ancient origins associated with the cult of the sun. Cartier adapted this motif on vanity cases and other objects during the 1920s as it made an ideal border pattern. The Chinese variant had its origins in archaic bronzes and in Cartier's hands later appeared as dragon's head terminals.
