Catalogue Note
Painted in Brussels, possibly in the apartment of the artist Dolf Ledel in the rue Nouvelle, where he was kept in hiding for a brief period in the fall o♏f 1942. Nussbaum had been taken prison in 1940 directly after the German occupation of Belgian, where he had fled earlier with his partner Felka Platek, and taken to the Jewish pr♛ison camp Saint Cyprian in the Pyrenees. He had returned to Belgian and to his partner after escaping the camp, and worked in Brussels for another two year before he was captured again and sent to Germany where he died in 1944.
