The painting is in good condition. The canvas is also in good condition apart from some small tears on the edges (upper left, upper right and lower right). There is a small hole on the upper right. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some slight retouching on the background (upper left corner, middle left- near edge, upper right quadrant- underneath the hat near strokes of green paint). Small flecks of retouching are also detected on the sarong of the figure (viewer's left, near the cage). Restoration is visible only upon examination with ultraviolet light. Two dark spots are found on the upper left and three dark spots are found on the middle left, as seen in catalogue illustration. Some flecks of paint loss are found on the upper middle edge (the area that used to be covered by frame) and the middle portion of the man's sarong. A few impastos are cracked (white tail feathers of the rooster, finger of the hand holding the rooster, sarong- left side near cage and corner of hem on the left side). Other than that, paint layers are intact and in stable condition.
