Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Sarah Walden, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is on a fine bevelled oak panel, which shows no sign of movement past or present. The back has a layer of red lead priming for additional stability. The right edge has a slightly rubbed line from past framing, but there is no other accidental damage. Some of the dark foreground in the lower right corner is a little thin, although the lighter monogram is stronger. But the beautiful dark detail of the reeds and the dark hedge in the foreground against the gleaming water, often vulnerable, are remarkably intact generally, as is the intricate brushwork of the town on the left. There is some thinness on the horizon, in the animals, the mill and the sail with the pentiment, in the far distance, and in some of the final sunset touches to the clouds on the right, but the vivid brushwork is exceptionally intact generally. This report was not done under laboratory conditions."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
