"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas has been lined and the paint is stable but a little raised. There is a scattering of restorations across the sky and through the central cloud. The paint surface elsewhere has been abraded in the past and substantially reinforced as a result; these areas include the shadow of the Triumphal Arch, the rigging of the ships, the Citadel, the sea and the foreground. The varnish is slightly discoloured and if it and the restoration were removed the painting would look very thin and abraded. Offered in a dark wood frame in good condition."
