"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is unlined and has lost tension allowing stretcher marks to appear. There are four patches reinforcing damages to the paint surface. The paint surface is stable but there is visible evidence of shrinkage to the paint layer resulting in large open cracks to the sea and lesser cracking in the sky. The four damages have been crudely restored and are discoloured, there is little restoration otherwise, and the varnish has degraded and discoloured. The painting is otherwise in an original untouched state and eminently salvageable."
