Description
- Mario Nuzzi, called Mario de' Fiori
- a garland of flowers
- oil on canvas, irregular shape, framed as an oval
Provenance
Schubart (according to an old label on the reverse).
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The painting has an old lining attached. There is a loss of tension and the paint surface is generally secure with only small areas that are unstable. There has been some previous damage around the edges and this has been retouched out and is discoloured. The impasto is well preserved in the flowers with only some minor paint loss detectable here. Discoloured restoration can be seen to the face, the majority of this retouching seems in excess to the damage beneath, although there is some minor paint loss here. The removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality.
Offered in a carved gilt wood frame."

Catalogue Note
The central figure appears to be by a different hand, probably an artist working in the circle of Carlo Maratta (1625-1713).
