Catalogue Note
The present work and the following ten lots are 17th-century copies after Bernardino Campi's reworkings of Titian's series of portraits of Roman emperors painted for Federico Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, between 1536 and 1539 (see H.E. Wethey, The Paintings of Titian, London 1975, vol. III, pp. 235-40, no. L-12).
These paintings are possibly from the same series as the Portrait of the Emperor Tiberius sold aꦡs 'Circle of Bernardino 💙Campi' in these Rooms, 27 October 1993, lot 118.
