Description
- The annunciation
oil on slate
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 22 April 2004, lot 66, where acquired by the present collector.
Condition
The slate support has split in half and the split runs diagonally left to right through the Madonna's leg and up through the right wing of the dove. The split has been restored and the slate is now stable. The paint surface, which has been recently cleaned, restored and re-varnished, has suffered from losses and deterioration; however, these are localised and mainly confined to the shadows, for example in the left portion of the Madonna's robes, to the background around her right hand, to the lower half of the angel's outstretched sleeve and to the drapery flowing behind. There is some restored paint loss along the length of the old split. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals more minor retouchings throughout. The highlights remain well preserved.
Sold with a gilt wood frame, in good condition.
