Anonymous sale, Madrid, Finarte, 26 October 2000🙈, lot 2, as 'Circle of Fed🦹erico Barocci' for 900,000 pesetas, where acquired by the present owner.
Condition
The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is generally secure if abraded in some areas. Scattered retouchings are visible. There is a canvas seam running vertically 30 cm from left edge. Inspection under UV light reveals further scattered further scattered strengthenings and retouchings. Offered in a later wooden frame which has suffered some knocks.

A 17th-century copy after the engraving by Cornelis Cort of 1577 (Hollstein no. 83) which was made after Barocci's original now in the National Gallery London (see N. Turner, Federico Barocci, Paris 2000, p. 169, cat. no. 42, reproduced in colour p. 35).
