"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is lined. The paint surface is stable, but slightly raised. There are ten , or so, restored vertical streaks across the surface, perhaps a result of previous water damage. There are one or two small losses to the background and some abrasions here where the paint is naturally thin. The shadows to the ringlets are, likewise, a little worn. The painting is generally in a good condition, the removal of a discoloured and degraded varnish would enhance the overall tonality."
