Condition
The flat, uncradled panel has a horizontal split in the centre but is stable. The paint surface is generally secure and under a very dirty varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals some scattered retouchings. Offered in a carved wooden frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note
Though traditionally attributed to Salomon van Ruysdael, the present work is more likely to be an early work by Palamedes. The figure of the mounted officer drinking on the far left of the picture and of the tented structure beside him are both repeated, for example, in a signed painting of 1630 formerly with S. Nystad, The Hague (reprodiced in G.S. Keyes, Op. cit., fig. 96).
