Provenance
Milton Gladstone collection, New York, 1961 (as Jan Vermeer van Delft?);
Anonymous sale, New York, Christie's, 4 April 1990, lot 223, for $18,000, (as by Salomon de Bray);
With René Schreuder, Aerdenhout.
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The cradled oak panel is in good condition and the paint layer is stable , apart from a recent small paint loss to the girl's chin. The wood grain is visible through the thinly painted background paint and there is restoration here to reduce this. There is visible discoloured retouchings to the sitter's face ; there is some minor damage here , however, the restoration is in excess to the paint loss. The removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality. The paint of the sitter is in good condition with an original sketchy quality to the dress.
Modern part painted and gilt moulded frame-good condition."
