Description
- Adam Frans van der Meulen
- The French army advancing towards Courtrai
- oil on canvas
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable. Across the sky is a scattering of retouchings, particularly along the top edge, upper left. There are some recent restored losses to the lower right and the foreground, the figure on the white horse, with the stick, has been restored as has the foliage in the left mid ground; generally the mid-ground is in good condition. Overall, the condition of the picture is good and has been recently restored; there would be little tonal improvement gained by the removal of the varnish.
Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame, some losses."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
