Description

- oil on canvas
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The canvas is lined and the paint surface is stable apart from areas lower left and right. There are painted additions to the edges and a recent scratch lower right. The background has been heavily restored, but this restoration appears excessive and indiscriminate in places. There are some retouchings to minor paint losses in the face and reduction of the pronounced black shrinkage cracks here. The black mantle is in good condition , bar some slight abrasions; the fingers of her right hand have been augmented along with the dog's coat. A discoloured varnish covers the surface and removing it would improve the overall tonality.
Offered in a black painted frame with a gold sight edge, some chips."

Catalogue Note
A sign of fidelity, the presence of the dog may indicate that this was intended as a marriage portrait.
