Description
- Cornelis van der Voort
- Portrait of a lady, half-length, wearing a red and black richly embroidered jacket, a white ruff and a white headdress
- inscribed and indistinctly dated centre left: ÆTATIS Suae.19./ Anº 1610 (?)
- oil on panel, oval
Provenance
Probably acquired by a member of the deceased owner's family in the 1920s or 1930s.
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The oak panel is made up of three planks. There are two joins both of which have been reinforced in the past and which are unstable. Other splits are detectable and these are unstable also. The paint surface is raised in areas along the wood grain and also unstable here too. Discoloured retouchings are visible to the face and hands and in the background left and also along the joins and splits. The black jacket is a little thin in places but overall the painted surface is in a good condition with the impasto well preserved and the delicate passages un-abraded. Most of the damage is structural only. The removal of the very discoloured and degraded varnish would significantly improve the tonality.
Offered in a black painted frame, some damages."
