Description
- Saint Paul
- oil on canvas, in an elaborate Florentine carved and gilt wood frame
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The canvas is lined and the paint surface is stable. There are restored damages through the cheek, ear and down through the beard to the sword handle; also through the manuscript right. There are paint losses to the upper left and lower left corners. There is a scattering of retouchings to the head where further small losses have occurred and the canvas texture has become visible through the paint layer. If the discoloured varnish were removed a tonal improvement would be achieved. Apart from the damages listed the painting is in a reasonable overall condition.
Offered in an elaborate carved and gilt wood frame, some chips"
