"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas has an old lining. The paint surface is stable. Under U-V light a scattering of retouchings can be seen across the surface, mainly concentrated to the upper left hand corner where disruption to the paint is worst and where there is some abrasion. Under a discoloured and degraded varnish the impasto can be seen to be in a good condition(slightly compromised in the torch and swaddling clothes) along with much of the paint. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame, some damages."
