Description

  • Harry Callahan
  • 'chicago' (trees in snow)
mounted, signed by the photographer in pencil on the mount, matted, 1950, probably printed in the 1960s (El Mochuelo, pl. 10; MoMA, p. 65 and rear cover; Callahan, p. 23; Elemental Landscapes, pl. 4; Photographer at Work, pl. 21)

Condition

This well-execute print has rich inky details and wide range of tone. This photograph, on a high gloss paper, is in generally very good condition. Upon close inspection, and in high raking light, a horizontal linear scuff, approximately 7 inches long, is visible at the bottom edge of the photograph. Also visible in raking light, are a number of very small, circular, translucent deposits of surface soiling lightly scattered around the lower left quadrant. The mount is slightly age-darkened around the periphery of the print. There are triangle-shaped pieces of linen tape adhered to each corner of the reverse of the mount. The top left and bottom right corner, on the reverse, have a small amount of adhesive residue as well. We base our dating of this print on both the appearance of the photographic paper, which is on a paper that is slightly glossier than prints made in the 1970s, and the mounted presentation. Typically, prints made in the 1970s were not mounted.
