Description
- Bill Brandt
- 'east end children' (girl dancing the lambeth walk)
titled and dated by the photographer in ink and with his credit stamp and printing notations in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse, 1939, probably printed in the 1950s (London in the Thirties, cover and pl. 15; Shadow of Light, pl. 12; Behind the Camera, p. 23; Brandt, pl. 1)
Provenance
Christie's New York, 18 October 1990, Sale 𝕴7132, Lot 222
Acquired by the present owner from the above
Condition
This print, on heavy single-weight paper with a slight surface sheen, is in generally good condition. There is a tiny, pale red droplet-shaped deposit of indeterminate nature in the upper central portion of the print and a tiny disruption of emulsion in the dancing girl's left leg area that are noticeable only upon close examination. The edges are somewhat rubbed, and the corners are bumped. There are a number of small soft and sharp handling creases that do not break the emulsion. When examined in raking light, faint silvering in the darks and small deposits of original retouching are visible.
On the reverse of the print, there is a small strip of paper tape at the lower edge and 2 cloth tape squares at the lower corners.
When examined with a black light, this print appears to fluoresce slightly.
