Condition
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc:
This painting has been fairly recently restored and could be hung as is. The canvas has been lined and the paint layer has been cleaned, retouched and varnished.
Under ultraviolet light there are restorations throughout the sky addressing cracking, abrasion, a fairly significant two inch square hole in the center right and other smaller spots. The buildings, the horses and the landscape in the remainder of the picture is in above average condition. There are only a few isolated retouches in the second horse to the finish line, in the building behind the back of this same jockey and in a few isolated spots in the grass.
The sky has attracted most of the retouches yet one expects pictures from this period in similar condition. It was most likely the cracking in the sky which began the series of abrasion and paint loss and the associated restorations. The picture should be hung as is.
