Catalogue Note
Edwards chose the start to depict many of the great races including the Hunt Cup at As🗹cot and The Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket. Apart from capturing the excitement and anticipation of the moment it allows Edwards to display his technical mastery. The inevitably bunched field is placed in perfect perspective while the combination of silks prompts a vibrant and joyous pallet.
Set high on the Sussex downs there are few more beautiful settings for a racecourse than Goodwood. T🐼he course was made by the third Duke of Richmond in 1801 and the Gold Cup, now the Goodwood Cup, was first run in 1812. The 5th Duke of Richmond's horses were trained by John Kent Snr. and for a time, in the mid-19th Century his Goodwood stables were the most successful in the country.
