The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This painting has been fairly recently restored. The canvas has been lined using wax as an adhesive. The paint layer has been cleaned although it may be slightly dirty at present. There appear to be no retouches to the ship or in the water. In the sky there are some soft areas which read slightly darkly under ultraviolet light and which may correspond to retouches. However, Dawson's palette reads rather lively under ultraviolet light and it is more than likely that if these are retouches, then they are not necessary and a reexamination of the paint layer would find it to be in very good condition. The painting could be hung as is but if required, would benefit from restoration.
