Condition
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
Full Cry:
This painting has been lined with glue. The lining is successful. The paint layer is dirty now and will respond well to cleaning.
Under UV, some of the darkest clouds are slightly abraded. There is some light restoration across the top addressing stretcher marks. There are also some restorations on the left side and upper right corner addressing some thinness, presumably. In the lower half of the picture, one can see slight thinness here and there, but overall the condition of this work is fairly good with some finer restoration required in the sky.
A Meet Near Bedfordshire:
Like its mate, this painting has been lined and is stable. In the sky, a very thin wash restoration is visible under UV. Some other retouches in the path in the lower right and lower center are also visible, along with a few spots in the horses.
More delicate restoration when the picture is cleaned will certainly produce a sharper and more detailed image.
