Condition

The work is in good condition, the canvas is lined. There is craquelure throughout the work and a few areas of visible inpainting such as in the upper right hand corner. UNDER UV: There are areas of inpainting under the barrel of the horse and a few lines through the center of the work and on the horse.

Catalogue Note

Reel, a grey mare foaled in 1838 was owned by T.J. Wells. Col. Wells' home Wellswood was located near Alexandria, Louisiana. Reel became one of the foundation mares for the Stud book. Reel was depicted by Troye when she was 20 years old. A larger version of thi🤡s painting is in the possession of the Jockey Club.
