Condition
The following condition report was prepared by the paper restorer Jane McAusland:
Support
The artist has used a rough sheet of wove paper to support this collage drawing. He has adhered it to a sheet of Formica type board with an unknown adhesive. The uneven left edge and losses on the lower edge, in my opinion, are the artist's intention.
The sheet has become darkened over the years as there has been no glazing to protect it in the frame resulting in it becoming quite severely darkened, also because the sheet has been exposed some liquid has fallen on it lower right, causing staining.
Medium
The medium has suffered a bit also due to lack of glazing in the frame.
Conservation Note
The paper that supports this work was of poor quality originally and has been made more brittle by exposure to the elements. In my opinion it would be risky to lift it from the Formica type backing, especially in view of the fact that it is a collage. Also the adhesive is unknown and may be a complex modern one. Tests would have to be carried out to ascertain if it would be possible to lift it, clean it and bring it back to its original state.
Note: This work was viewed outside studio conditions.
