Catalogue Note
Painted in 1981. In 1977 Chicago (the eighty-five year old former boxer, David Smith) began to model for Craigie Aitchison and the pair would either meet at Craigie's studio near Shaftesbury Avenue or at his home in Kennington. In 1982, the year after the present painting was completed and in conjunction with the Craigie (Arts Council) retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery, a film about Craigie was made for BBC Television. Painting Chicago shows footage of Craigie painting the elderly model and the relationship that existed between them.
