Catalogue Note

Philipp Häusler (1887-1966) was born in Hungary and attended the Textile Industry College and♚ the Kunstgewerbeschule before entering the school for architecture under Josef Hoffman.  Hoffman then hired Häusler for his own drawing office.  In 1920 Hoffman asked him to reorganize the Wiener Werkstätte, and he was appointed "Chief of the General Management Directorate, responsible for the central administration of all enterprises"  His focus was to put the organization on more commercially viable terms, and he had designed for a number of firms in Vienna before 1913.  Häusler's role grew with Hoffman's illness, but he clashed with the more artistic personalities, particularly Dagobert Peche and the Primavesis, and was forced by the latter to leave.

A smaller version of this bowl (diameter 14.2in./ 36cm) was sold Kinsky, Vienna, November 2ꦡ1, 2007, lot 620.

We would like to thank Elizabeth Schmnuttermeiℱer for her assistance in cataloging this lot.
