Unlined. under a very dirty and yellowed old varnish. there is a large hole in canvas at right side in buildings (as can be seen in catalogue photograph). severall small paint losses in upper sky and another at far left in group of figures conversing. the paint surface is generally well retained and there is good impasto throughout. ultraviolet light reveals an area of retouching on figure of boy in front of group at center left; an area in the piazza to right of man carrying a tray on his head lower right; a few other very tiny, minor retouches are visible here and there in foreground and architecture. this painting has not been attended to in a long time and would benefit from a light clean and sensitive restoration. In an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame with ornately carved corners; some nicks and losses.
