RELATED LITERATURE

B. I. Gilman, Catalogue of Sculpture in the Collection of the Hispanic Society of America, New York, 1932, D296

The four angels✨ and two beas⭕ts may represent the Apocalypse; the four angels holding back the four winds (symbols of the great empires of antiquity) or the fire-breathing, lion-headed horses in the calvary of the four angels of death.

The design of fan-shaped leaves springing from a lower range of leaves and incorporating a pinecone on each side is noted by Gilman (op.cit., p. 112 and 113) as being a typical motif used on Romanesque capitals in Catalonia. This general composition is found at the 12th century cloister of San Daniel at Girona, Spain and at the Barcelona Cathedral on the tomb of Arnau de Gurb🐻.
