Description

- "Crab" Inkstand, Model No. 856
- impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/856
with clear glass inkwell
patinated bronze with mounted shell
Condition
Overall in very good condition. The patinated bronze surfaces show minimal gentle wear and rubbing, and with a few small scattered ink stains. The mounted shell appears to be original and undisturbed, showing minor surface soiling. The interior inkwell and underside of the hinged top with ink staining, surface soiling, and light oxidation. The body of the crab is cleverly hinged, and also opens to reveal a small storage compartment. With replaced clear glass inkwell liner. The color of the patina is richer and more vibrant than in the catalogue illustration (which is slightly dark). A superb example of this rare crab inkstand, displaying a particularly rich green patina heightened in shades of russet brown.
