Description
- Tiffany Studios
- An Early Table Lamp
- shade engraved S222
base impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/D638 with the Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company monogram - favrile glass and patinated bronze
Condition
Overall in very good condition. This lamp was originally designed as an oil lamp, and was later converted to electricity. The favrile glass lobe-formed shade and lower base unit display the identical coloration and pulled-feather decoration, strongly supporting that the shade and base unit are original to one another. The favrile glass shade and base are in exceptional condition, with a few scattered small air bubble inclusions (inherent in the making), and with a few light surface scratches and minor surface soiling. At each juncture between the lobed sections of the base and shade there are several very small burst air bubbles (inherent in the making). The patinated bronze components display an exceptionally rich russet brown and green patina, with minor surface scratches and rubbing consistent with age and gentle use. The lamp retains its original gas burner controls, shade support ring, and reticulated collar (which is slightly irregular and bent inward at a few points). With a small black plastic switch which was added later to the top of the base, located opposite the burner controls. Lacking plastic cord guide on the bottom section of the base. A superb example of an early oil lamp, displaying exceptional form and exquisitely articulated pulled-feather decoration. The glass is intensely iridized displaying strong color and luminosity.
