- the counterweight inset with "Turtleback" tiles the shade with three carved dragonflies and an insect
Provenance
Philip Chasen, East Norwich, New York, 1993
Condition
Overall in very good condition. The patinated bronze surfaces of the base showing gentle wear and light rubbing to the patina; the base with a few minor surface scratches; the top support arms with a few small and minor areas of patina loss. The counterweight is in very good condition, with no visible cracks or condition issues to the turtleback tile glass. The favrile glass shade is in very good condition. The top shade aperture shows no visible surface chipping, only a dark abrasion line just below the exterior of the rim from the support screws rubbing the glass over time. There are three carved dragonflies, and one smaller insect, on the exterior of the shade, presumably to conceal burst air bubbles at the time of execution. The interior of the shade has two very small and shallow circular areas (3/4 inch in diameter) that have been ground down, also presumably at the time of execution to conceal burst air bubbles (one is located directly beneath the carved insect). With period socket and switch. A fine example of this rare counterbalance lamp model, showing strong iridescence and luminosity to the inset turtleback tiles and favrile glass shade, and a rich green and russet brown patina to the bronze surfaces throughout.
