Condition
This painting has been fairly recently lined, cleaned, retouched and varnished. The lining was applied because of a structural repair which addresses a break in the canvas. This break begins near the table top on the right side, extends through the neck of the sitter to the roof of the house on the left side above the shoulder, and then extends down into the sitter's right shoulder on the left of the picture. This is a very isolated damage and the restoration is perfectly competent. The picture could be hung as is.
The above condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
