Condition
This painting is in very fresh and good condition. The canvas is unlined and appears to be still stretched on its original stretcher. The very unique paint layer, which includes grit in the pigment and scraping to he surface, is all undamaged there do not appear to be any restorations.
The canvas is slightly loose on the stretcher and it may be that a slightly more competent stretcher and a re-stretching of the canvas may be in order. However, the picture is in lovely condition and could be hung as is.
One's eye is drawn to a slight scrape in the shoulder of the female figures standing on the right, which seems to be original. One should be careful with this kind of painting, before assuming that any of these scrapes are anything but original.

Catalogue Note
One of Rufino Tamayo🌠's most important themes was that o♎f humanity in the universe. He explored it throughout his career and towards the end of his life, the human figure came to dominate the compositions. Perhaps inspired by his long time partner, wife and muse Olga, the figures of couples also populated his work.
In Pareja en Gris, both themes intermingle with the couple placed against an evening sky of stars and moons (a sky akin to Constelación, 1947♓, lot 10 in this sale). In it, Tamayo creates a timeless sce꧑nario of a man and woman strolling in the evening under the stars.
