Description

  • Bernardino Fungai
  • the nativity
  • tempera on panel

Provenance

Sir Alfred Jodrell;
The Hon. Roger Coke;
Robin Combe, Esq;
His sale et al., London, Sotheby's, 28 November ꦑ1962, lot 68 (as by Giacomo Pacchiarotto), where purchased by Arthur Tooth  for £900 on behalf of the 🌳present owners.

Condition

The panel has a fairly pronounced horizontal bow and is supprted on the reverse by a single horizontal inlaid baton. The condition of the paint surface varies, there being large tracts where it is very well preserved, such as the background landscape, and other isolated areas where it is not so, such as the extreme lower left corner where it has been overpainted. The christ child is a ;ittle worn, as is the hair of the madonna. The principal areas of restoration are: to Joseph's hands, to his eyebrows and to the right part of his nose; to the left part of the madonna's face and to her cheek, to the outline of her hands; beneath the Christchild's chin and to the right of his outstretched arm. The are immediately to his left is largely repainted. There are further patches of restoration to Joseph's red cloak. The painting woudl certainly benefit from a cleaning of the old now discoloured restorations.
