Description

  • Bartolomeo Passerotti
  • portrait of a man, head and shoulders, wearing a moustache and a black shirt with a white collar
  • inscribed on the reverse of the original canvas: Passerotti
    and with monogram: ATC
  • oil on paper, laid on canvas

Condition

The paper has been laid down on canvas and seems stable and secure. This was probably necessitated by an old T-shaped tear of 7 x 3 cm. to the right cheek runnning just below the ear lobe. A damage of 2 x 1 cm lies just below this and there is another of similar size upper left. There has been some spot retouching just beside the right eye, but apart from this the great majority of the face and hair are very well preserved indeed and the brushstrokes still well defined. The only other interventions are spot retouchings to the left outline, the tunic at the shoulder and two small losses or damages just above the head in the background. The varnish remains clear and even and the painting should not require further attention. Thislot is offered with a carved and gilt wood French frame in good order.
