The canvas has an effective relining which has not overly flattened the paint surface. The paint surface is secure with fine craquelure throughout and is under a dirty old yellowed varnish. There are some minor areas of frames abrasion on all four sides where retouching work is visible to the naked eye. This is confirmed under UV light which also reveals some minor scattered infilling of the craquelure and larger areas of retouching in the sitter's fur collar, and to the left and right of his head. Offered in a gilt plaster frame in fair condition.
