Description
- Jean-Baptiste Pillement
- a Southern landscape with fishermen near a stone house beside a river
- signed and dated lower left: Jean Pillement/ 1790
- oil on canvas
Condition
The painting is very slightly cooler in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The signed canvas had an old but effective relining which has not flattened the paint surface. Some old minor frame abrasion is present. The paint surface appears to the naked eye to be clean, beautifully preserved with its impasto and in good confdition. Inspection under UV light confirms the excellent condition with only very minor strengthenings and a restored scratch and retouching in the sky.
Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note
Similar dilapidated and picturesque stone structures, set above or beside a rocky torrent, are a feature of many of Pillement's paintings from the late 1780s and early 1790s. Compare, for example, that of 1786 sold New York, Christie's, 19 May 1994, lot 95, or that of 1793 sold Paris, Arteval, 13 December 2005, lot 44.
