Condition

This condition report has been provided by Hamish Dewar, Hamish Dewar Ltd. Fine Art Conservation, 14 Masons Yard, Duke Street, St James's, London SW1Y 6BU. Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is inscribed on the reverse. The rather crude wooden keyed stretcher would appear to be the original. There is an overall pattern of lines of drying craquelure, which are characteristic of the artist. These lines could be reduced with localised treatment on the low pressure conservation table and I would be confident that this would ensure long-term structural stability without having to resort to lining. It is obviously very encouraging to find the canvas in it's original unlined state. Paint Surface The paint surface has a discoloured varnish layer and should respond well to cleaning and revarnishing. There is one very small paint loss in the lower right corner. This is 2 cm above the lower horizontal framing edge and 12 cm in from the right vertical framing edge. No retouchings are visible under ultra-violet light. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in very good condition and should be transformed by cleaning and revarnishing.
