Condition
This condition report has been provided by Hamish Dewar, Hamish Dewar Ltd. Fine Art Conservation, 14 Masons Yard, Duke Street, St James's, London SW1Y 6BU.
Structural Condition
The artist's panel, which has a layer of gesso on the reverse, is providing a stable and even
structural support.
Paint Surface
The paint surface has a very fine pattern of drying craquelure which is characteristic of the
artist's works on panel.
The varnish layer would appear to have discoloured and cleaning would therefore be
beneficial.
Inspection under ultra-violet light shows only minimal retouchings, the most significant of which
are on the right vertical framing edge. There is also a small loss on the left vertical framing
edge and one small inpainted loss which is approximately 2 cm in length, just to the left of the
three standing men on the right of the composition.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition and should respond
well to surface cleaning and revarnishing.
