Condition

The canvas has been re-lined. There are scattered spots of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably to repairs to the book and to the lower edge of the figure's hair (both patched on the reverse), scattered minor spots at the lower right, and a spot to the upper right. This work is in overall very good condition, with rich colours and fine detail, and ready to hang. Held in a simple, gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame with moulded floral motifs.

Catalogue Note

The present work exemplifies Holsoe's atmospheric interiors. The model, shown from the back, remains anonymous, the composition displays a strong geometric patterning and the whole is as much a study of light and form as the portrayal of an individual in a domestic environment.
