Catalogue Note
The present work is an intimate yet forthright portrait by Wyspianski of his wife, Teodora Teofila Pytko, holding one of his four children. Wyspianski married Pytko, from the village of Konary near Zabno, in 1900. In marrying this simple country girl, the Crakovian Wyspianski emulated the Young Poland movement's disillusionment with the social constraints of the bourgeoisie.
Stanislaw Wyspianski was a poet, painter, playwright, designer, and art conservator, and one of the most remarkable and unique artists of Poli🔯sh Modernism. A man of versatile talent, he expressed himself in almos꧋t every domain of the visual arts and in literature with great ease and skill, successfully marrying a modern aesthetic with the Polish folk tradition.
