This condition report has been provided by Hamish Dewar, Hamish Dewar Ltd. Fine Art Conservation, 14 Masons Yard, Duke Street, St James's, London SW1Y 6BU. Structural Condition The canvas is lined and is supported on a new wooden keyed stretcher. There is a raised craquelure pattern throughout the paint surface, most notably in the sky. This appears to be securely held by the lining adhesive and is no cause for structural concern. Paint Surface The paint surface has a relatively even matt varnish layer. Inspection under ultra violet light was inconclusive because we were not able to examine the painting in sufficiently dark conditions. However, a number of thick horizontal bands of retouching clearly fluoresce. This may be due to losses having occured when the painting has been rolled or folded in the past. Several smaller retouchings are evident throughout the paint surface. Many of these are unfilled and require texturing, as at present they are clearly visible to the naked eye. Summary The painting therefore appears to be in fair and stable condition and while no further work is required for reasons of conservation, careful texturing of the retouchings could be considered.
