Catalogue Note
William Zorach writes in his autobiography, Art is My Life: " I have always been deeply conscious of the fundamental elements of life. There is nothing more emotionally significant than the relationship between mother and child unless it is the element of love between man and woman. Life exists through them and could not exist without them. From the beginning I searched within myself for the forms that would express this love. I felt I must give this subject the dignity due this significant moment and imbue it with passion and exaltation. In 1933 I modeled in clay, life-size or over, two figures called 'Embrace.'"
