Description

the curved steel blade with flat back edge and inscribed with marks and the maker's name towards the forte, the hilt of typical shamshir form, worked in gold with applied wire-work and filigree scrolling geometric motifs and roundels, the cross-guard with central floral element and bud-form quillons, a three-layered chain running between the pommel and the outer quillon, the leather-covered wooden scabbard with mounted gilt metal lock, chape and suspension loops, all decorated with palm-tree design, geometric patterns and arabesques

Condition

This item is in good condition. Some very minor restoration to a filigree roundel on the hilt. Minor marks on the blade near the forte and minor losses to the scabbard, especially to the reverse. As viewed.

A sword with a very similar scabbard is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It was presented to Lord Athlone in 1928 by Ibn Saud (see Robert Elgood, The Arms and Armour of Arabia, Aldershot, 1994, p.22, no.2.18).
