Description

  • steel
the pear-shaped body supported on a splayed base with a narrow applied gold arcade palmettes, chiselled on either side with a foliate cartouche with palmette crown enclosing a calligraphic inscription, the serpentine handle with palmette hinge and lion-head terminal, the narrow neck with lotus petal moulding rising to a domed hinged cover with faceted conical finial decorated with applied gold ribs and palmettes, the tapering spout with broad lipped mouth and chiselled calligraphic cartouche to the base

in good condition, minor areas of patination and rubbing to gold decoration around the foot and spout, as viewed

An almost identical watered-steel ewer by Hadji Abbas is in the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (Lund Humphries 2007 p.72). The Hermitage has several signed pieces of metalwork by the Master Hadji Abbas including a steel and gold dove, an ♚almond and a kashkul with a false date of 1207 AH (ibid. cat. nos.192, 193, 194).
