- a pair, both tempera and gold ground on panel

Anonymous sale, New York, Christie's, June 12, 1981, lot 126 (two of a set of four, as attributed to Carlo Crivelli; with eight panels of the same predella comprising the previous two lots);
There purchased by the present collector.

Condition
Both panels are comprised of single pieces of wood, and are slightly bowed. Both pictures are under a milky varnish, which under UV renders older retouches largely invisible. The picture with the reading Saint has some small retouches in the book which appear to be applied over the varnish. Some of the gilding has abraded in both pictures, revealing the red ground. The figures themselves are in favorable condition. Overall both pictures present strong images. Both pictures are in carved and giltwood frames with minor chips and some abrasion to the gilding.

Catalogue Note
The present pair is from a series of twelve panels depicting the apostles which originally formed the predella of an unknown altarpiece (all twelve were included in the 1981 auction, see Provenance). These paintings were first recognized as being by the Lombard painter, Vincenzo Civerchio, by Keith Christiansen. He compares them to an early portable altarpiece of circa 1490 in the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo (see M. Marubbi, Vincenzo Civerchio: Contributo alla cultura figurativa creasca nel primo cinquecento, 1986, p. 80.).
