Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This unusual panel has been restored, probably in the middle of the 20th century, and although some of these restorations are visible, particularly across the bottom of the frame and in the lower portion of the frame, the painting looks to be in healthy condition.
The Madonna and Child and the gilding and foreground surrounding the figural group seem to be very healthy. The varnish is quite dull and there seems to be a misleading dirt layer on the surface which may be safely removed; tests should be made here to determine this.
The animals in the dark color surrounding the figures are well preserved. There seems to be no restoration of note in the three saints in the panels below and the condition is generally healthy, although baffled by the brown streaks of old varnish covering the picture.
The gilding seems to be original. It is worn in the tooled areas of the frame and the architectural elements so a careful investigation into the condition and the potential for restoration is advised.
